CROWS Gunnery Training

The Vehicle Gunnery Range familiarizes Soldiers with operating the CROWS from the M114 Up-Armored HMMWV variant. CROWS stands for Common Remotely Operated Weapon System. It takes the place of the traditional open turret so that Soldiers can operate weaponry from inside the HMMWV. The system is joystick controlled and can mount a variety of current weapons like the M240B, M2, Mk 19 and next generation XM weaponry.
The firing range has two parts. On the first, Soldiers fire the CROWS from a fixed position. On the second, Soldiers fire the CROWS while the vehicle is moving. A fellow Soldier drives the HMMWV while the gunner controls the CROWS from the rear. The CROWS is equipped with a Laser Rangefinder. When a target is "lazed" the targeting system relays trajectory information to the CROWS which in turn automatically calculates optimal balistic trajectory to the target. Put simply if you laze a target the CROWS system will hit it.
Note : If the HMMWV changes position after a target has been lazed the gunner will have to reacquire the target to retain accuracy
