The U.S. Army describes the Javelin missile as a medium-range, man portable,shoulder-launched, fire-and-forget, anti-armor weapon system that provides a highly formidable capability able to defeat all known armor threats for the dismounted close fight.
The Javelin missile has proven to be extremely versatile and effective in its radically different combat deployment. Consisting of a missile and Command Launch Unit (CLU), the Javelin has an effective range of between 75 meters to more than 2,500 meters. In addition to its day/night target engagement capabilities, the Javelin CLU, with its 4x day magnification and its 4x/9x thermal magnification, provides thermal observation capabilities out to approximately 4,000 meters for dismounted infantry and vehicles.
Soldiers train to use the Javelin missile system with what is called the Basic Skills Trainer or BST. The Javelin BST is a classroom trainer designed to provide Soldiers with exercises for teaching the skills required to engage targets with the Javelin. The trainer reproduces real world terrain and virtual targets. In most cases training on the BST is all a Soldier may get prior to engaging a live target. Most Soldiers agree, it's all the training they need.
Training Requirements:
- Objective
- In this training course, you will first learn how to operate the Javelin missile system using the Basic Skills Trainer (BST). Upon successful completion of the BST, you will be presented with an opportunity to participate in a timed live fire exercise which you must pass in order to be qualified to use the Javelin missile system in the field.
- Task
- Complete the Basic Skills Trainer (BST) simulated combat engagement exercise to unlock the Javelin Missile ability in Co-Op Missions.
- Conditions
- Operate a BST training device within a controlled test environment seek and engage a variety of stationary and moving enemy armor targets.
- Standards
- Achieve a passing score on the BST, engage and destroy 3 simulated targets. Achieve a passing score during the Timed Live Fire Exercise, engage and destroy 10 valid targets within 10 minutes. Avoid damaging friendly forces and adhere to all range cadre instructions.
