Introduction This manual is presented by the America’s Army Mentor Program. AAMP is a group of talented America’s Army players led by the America’s Army Community Management team. In what we believe to be a first in multi-player on-line gaming, AAMP has been formed to assist new players in learning the game. This manual provides follow up information and reference material for players that have attended an AAMP session on Urban Assault. Urban Assault is a small, fast-paced, close-quarters battle map. It is one of the most popular maps on America's Army servers, due to the speed of rounds, as well as the balanced layout of the map. The map consists of two fixed spawn points, one for each team. There are two fixed objectives, each located on the second floor of buildings located on opposite ends of the map. The mission is completed when one team has taken both objectives, eliminated all opposing forces, or time expires.

Mission Briefing Urban Assault is neutral map in that both teams are tasked with completing the same mission; in this case securing Objectives East and West. As such, the mission briefing shown below, is identical for both Assault West and Assault East. 1. SITUATION: A coalition convoy was raided and the cargo was stolen. It has been confirmed that the insurgents and the cargo are based in a residential area of the city. Due to the dense urban nature of the area it will be necessary to do a house by house assault on foot. 2. MISSION: A squad from the 172nd Sep. Infantry BDE must conduct an assault to take and hold objectives cargo ALPHA and BRAVO. Once objectives are captured wait for arrival of friendly reinforcements to transport cargo. 3. GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

A. ENEMY FORCES: Squad sized local insurgents, armed with small arms and hand-held munitions; expect enemy to have superior knowledge of terrain. B. FRIENDLY FORCES: A squad from the 172nd Sep. Infantry BDE. C. TERRAIN: Dense Urban mudbrick and stone housing. Thin alleys, mostly 1 story buildings with pockets of 2 story buildings. Surrounded by larger government buildings. D. ROE: Rules of Engagement published 12MAY05 are in effect. Use appropriate force against positively identified enemy combatants only. Minimize damage to local infrastructure. Be advised civilian refugees may be present in contested area.

Spawn Points Both Assault West and Assault East teams spawn in recessed alleys located on either side of the map. Between them are a series of alleys and buildings. These spawn points are fixed in location from round to round.

Objectives There are two objectives in Urban Assault, both located in second floor rooms. Access to each of these rooms is provided by two wooden doors, and both rooms have a pair of boarded windows. Note: Bullets can and will penetrate both doors and boarded windows. Each objective is represented as a stack of wooden cargo crates. To secure an objective, you will need to get close to it, and hold down your “USE” key. While holding down this key, a progress bar will be displayed on your screen. When the progress bar fills up, you have taken the objective, and it will turn green on your Situation Awareness Indicator (SAI). If the Enemy has taken an objective, it will be colored red on your SAI. When either team has secured, at the and possess both objectives, the mission is over. Note: While taking an objective, you will not be able to move, and your weapon will be in a down position. It is far easier to secure an objective when you are in a kneeling or prone position. You are most vulnerable while taking an objective, and should try to do so when another player is providing cover for you. When preparing to take an objective, it is best to align yourself in a way that provides you some visibility of Enemy Soldiers, should they rush through a door during the process.

General Tactics – The First 60 Seconds Due to the small size of Urban Assault, surviving the first minute of the round is often a rarity for a new or inexperienced player. The following pages will provided general tactics which will help you identify the common approaches from each spawn, and where you are most likely to encounter Enemy Soldiers for each. The Alpha approach from East Spawn takes you down the alley directly in front of you, into the Alpha East courtyard, and up the stairs. From this vantage point, you are likely to see Enemy Soldiers in any of three locations. 1. The second floor of Alpha West building 2. Ledge at the top of the Bravo West stairs 3. Charlie West (Hole in the Wall)

The Bravo approach provides the fastest access to the Western objective, and as you might suspect, is also the most dangerous approach to make. Leaving East spawn, you will run straight ahead into the small archway, and up the stairs to the second floor of Bravo East building. From this upper terrace, you will be able to see Enemy Soldiers in an around Charlie West (Hole in the Wall) and also any Enemy Soldiers that have made it into the Western Objective room. Remember, again, that the boarded up windows provide little or no cover. 1. Charlie West (Hole in the Wall) 2. Back side of Charlie West (On ledge, near chair) 3. Inside of Western Objective room

The Charlie approach is typically used when you have the intention of quickly securing and holding the Eastern objective. Running quickly across center alley, you will continue up the stairs to Eastern objective building. Enter the room and secure the objective. Note: This approach will require you to cross the central alley early in the round. Make sure you are running full speed when crossing this alley, as it is likely you will receive fire from Enemy Soldiers at the other end of the alley, and may be wounded or eliminated if you move slowly.
